Ever wondered about the average day of a UX/UI designer? Get an idea from one of our junior designers, Claire Smith, as she walks as through her day and her favourite things about her role.

What does your role as a UX UI designer at Kooba mean to you?

My job is to basically make a user’s experience on a website go as smoothly as possible. And, I do this by creating a site that looks eye-catching, but also by having reasoning behind the design to back up those design decisions I’ve made. My main goal is really to create a website that anyone can use at ease but can also enjoy the experience they have on the site.

What does a typical day look like for you as a UX UI designer?

A typical day for myself would involve checking up on SLA* projects to make sure all to-do’s are complete or are in progress in the design. If there's a live project, then I’d make sure all UX and UI is progressing smoothly and that the client is up to date with everything going on with the project.

*An SLA is a service level agreement or ongoing retainer. This facilitates a long term relationship with our clients and allows us to continually work with our clients to optimise their sites and make proactive suggestions to continually enhance their digital presence.

What’s your favourite part of the day?

My favourite part of the day is when we go for coffee after our team standup meeting. And, I also love when I get the chance to do visual research of what’s hot at the moment with design trends. This really helps when we have to get inspiration for new website designs. And a favourite part of the year I’d say would be around Halloween when we get to do Mocktober. Mocktober is a challenge where we get to create our own website or app design for anything Halloweeny. We really get to go wild with our ideas, and its nice to see everyone’s take on Mocktober.

What is your favourite previous project and why?

My favourite project would have been Asset Class. This would have been my first big project I helped out on when I first started in Kooba. The project ran very smoothly and the branding we did for the client was really nice to work with.

Given that metrics are a key to success for our clients, tell us about how metrics play a role in your work.

What helps us determine the new design for a site is really when we monitor user metrics on the current site to see how users are interacting with it. This helps us determine what’s missing or what’s not needed, and then we remake the structure by using those metrics. For example we track sessions, session duration (minutes), bounce rate etc. We also use Hotjar which shows us how users scroll and click on a page, so we can see how many users drop off at a certain point or where users are clicking CTA buttons or other touchpoints.
